For Mother’s Day, I did an interview where I spoke about my own experiences as a mom. Watch the video or read about it here.

Being a mom is the ultimate gratification for any woman. There’s nothing else I would rather be doing.

My idea of a perfect day is being home with my kids – that’s the ultimate joy.

Favourite memories…

With three fantastic kids, I’m blessed with a lot of wonderful memories. Some of the best moments we’ve shared were when I was starting out as a single mom, and it was just the four of us in an apartment. We were living from hand to mouth, a very basic way of life, but it was also the most fun we had as a family. As we could not afford much, we learned to enjoy the simple things in life – going for walks, climbing trees, picking fruit!

What I learned is that children’s idea of fun is defined more by their parents than the kids themselves. Sometimes parents place too great an expectation on what’s fun. You don’t need to take them to Universal Studios. All kids really want is for parents to be there 100 per cent.

You may forget the details, but you don’t forget the feeling, the sense of joy that comes from being together.

Hanging out with my family

Old wives’ tales…

When I was pregnant, my mother-in-law – an amazing woman whom I love and cherish – had very strong views about how things should be done, like what you should eat and what you shouldn’t. But what I really remember was her insisting that I not take a shower for a month after giving birth. I lasted only ten days, and I’m not passing it on to my kids!

Advice for new moms…

If I had to do it all over again, I would relax, embrace motherhood and remember it’s OK to set aside some “me time”. Moms tend to feel guilty about everything, but children don’t remember the mistakes, they remember the love. I would set aside quality time for myself because the best way to take care of your kids is to take care of yourself first. What do they tell you before a flight? Put on your oxygen mask before tending to your child. How can you give your kids air when you’re running out of it yourself?

We need to take care of ourselves first, so we can give more care.

My own mom, my biggest influence…

In a recent conversation with my baby, Lalli – who’s already 21 but will always be my baby – I realised that I’ve passed on a lot of my mom’s values to my kids. The way I value my health, my well-being, and the kind of lifestyle choices I make, I’m seeing all that in my children.

I’m so grateful for my mom. She’s inspired me to be a better influence on my kids. I’m not just influencing my children, it’s also the generations to come who will pick up these values.

Four wonderful generations - my mom's on the far left!

Finally, an ode to all mothers…

Roses are red, violets are blue;
mothers rock the world, and so should you!
